ASSIGNMENT due Wed 6/30
> Full scale corner detail showing top of structure and pop-up operation. Use steel members with welded joints where needed and appropriate hardware.
> Complete 3"=1' basswood model based on current concept including pop-up structure.
> Draw 4 details at full scale (some of these may require multiple details showing different views - plan, section etc). One drawing per sheet with dimensions and annotations:
1. Pop-up structure
2. Castors at bottom, as well as the ones for sliding panels
3. Hooks holding up panels on U-channels
4. Corner detail where 2 homosote panels meet at 90 degrees.
Post drawings at 5 pm INDIVIDUALLY. Also post photos of basswood model and updated Rhino drawing (these can be a group postings).
ASSIGNMENT due Wed 6/23
Group Work
Continue working as a group to develop design that was discussed in studio. By next Wed. we should be looking at a detailed 1/2" scale model with all structural elements, details and moving parts present. This will serve as a working model to be used during studio to test out ideas. Bring tools and materials to studio so that we can have a productive working session.
Individual Work
DRAW a minimum of 2 details (2 different ones or 2 versions of the same one) that are applicable to the current design. These are to be drafted in CAD with dimensions, annotations and correct line weights. Be clear about which elements (structure, hardware etc.) are based on industry standards and which ones are to be custom fabricated. Photocopy specific products from McMaster-Carr that you plan to use, or take photographs at hardware store. Prepare to pinup on Wed.:
> 1/2" detail drawings plotted
> photocopies and/or photographs of products
> other appropriate sketches and drawings
CONSTRUCT one of your details at full scale, either using off-the-shelf parts or custom fabricated in the shop.
Blog assignment to be posted individually by 5 pm Sat:
> Detail drawings (min. 2 per person)
> Photograph of full scale detail, can be in-progress
One of you should post the in-progress 1/2" group model as well.
Update your posts later in the week when constructions are complete.
ASSIGNMENT due Wed 6/16
Work as group to develop a design based on Ali's scheme with some elements from Jamilla and Santiago incorporated if appropriate.
1/2" mockup of entire structure using basswood
Larger mockups of details
Sketches and scaled drawings of details
Hardware store research
ASSIGNMENT due Wed 6/9
Full scale detail mockup - each of you will construct a portion of your proposed design at full scale as a means of testing out materials and movable parts. Use actual materials/hardware when possible (plywood, homosote, castors, hinges etc.) but chipboard and basswood may also be used to represent custom-made parts. A trip to the hardware store is required for this assignment.
Welding - practice! You can test out welding connections for your mockup if applicable, or anything that you haven't tried yet. Post photos on blog.
Sketches and drawings - use these to explain how your detail works in relationship to your larger system; include a plan layout of the studio showing your structure in relationship to desks.
Blog posting due Saturday 5 pm: photo of mockup 50% complete
ASSIGNMENT due Wed 6/2
As a group, come up with 3 design options for the structure. For each option draw and print out to scale with correct line weights:
plan @ 1/2"=1'-0"
section @ 1/2"=1'-0"
exploded axonometric showing assembly of parts
detail in 3D
1st year studio plan showing layout of proposed structure with desks @ 1/2"=1'-0"
Each student must post 1 detail drawing to blog by Saturday at 5 pm.
Bring supplies to build group 1"=1'-0" basswood model during class.
Welding workshop starts at noon - wear appropriate clothing.
