PORTABLE ARCHITECTURE
The objective of this studio is to design and build a prototype structure that will serve as a portable pin-up wall for design studios. This course provides an opportunity for students to develop skills in architectural detailing and construction methods through a hands-on learning process. The design of the prototype will be developed through a series of in-studio group charrettes using drawings and models, followed by full-scale mockups and material/structural experiments in woodshop. In addition, this studio will explore ways in which to improve the environment of the first year studio space by rethinking its layout to include the portable wall units. The prototype will be complete by the end of the course, which will conclude with a final presentation as a means of synthesizing and sharing both process and product of the summer.
The class meets one afternoon per week and attendance is mandatory during the entire class time. There will be both individual and group assignments to be done outside of studio generally due the following week but the instructors may also ask that certain items be submitted electronically during the week between class meetings.
Although this is primarily a group project, there will be certain assignments to be done individually. During group working sessions, each student is expected to actively participate in discussions, field trips, design development and construction. Documentation of the process over the course of the summer will be an integral component of the studio work. Students will be required to individually turn in a portfolio of the work done over the summer that will include sketches, drawings, models and photographs.
